When it comes to parenting, a child’s safety is priority. Car seats play a big role in the mission to keep kids safe, but parents should be cautious when it comes to their children sleeping in car seats. The wiggling a little one does while in a car seat may put their body into positions that can cause positional asphyxia.
Positional asphyxia causes the airways to be cut off if a child cannot adjust their body on their own. This is why it is important for adults to continuously monitor the breathing and comfort level of their little ones in car seats, especially babies and toddlers. Long road trips that keep babies and toddlers in car seats for extended periods of time can be risky, and using car seats as a napping tool should be off limits.
Car Seat News
Many people don’t understand the risks associated with leaving a baby in a car seat. This was especially true for Lisa Smith’s babysitter, who called Smith with the heartbreaking news that her daughter would not wake up from her nap (in a car seat). Smith was unaware that her babysitter used car seats for nap time until that day. Mia, Smith’s 17-month-old daughter, never woke up.
