Strange New Jewelry Trend For Moms

Custom jewelry goes beyond names and initials to include body parts.

Personalized jewelry has taken on a whole new meaning with this new trend. New moms are replacing stamped baby names with their baby’s umbilical stump.

Ruth Avra, a jewelry artist, began experimenting with this idea in 2012 when she made a necklace complete with her friend’s son’s umbilical stump. She explained that these pieces serve as a reminder of the connections between mom and baby.

Although this might be news to some of us, saving umbilical cords for good luck or a reminder of the miracle of childbirth has been seen in other cultures for years. This type of jewelry making has been around for some time too, and it goes beyond the umbilical cord. Some artists have created jewelry featuring breast milk, baby teeth, and the placenta.

Avra admitted this isn’t for everyone, but whether you like the idea or not, you will know what’s on the inside of that “unique” piece of jewelry the new mom in your circle is wearing now.
