Mom Shares the Heartbreaking Reason She Knows Breast Isn't Always Best

Just one bottle could have saved her baby's life.

Jillian Johnson's son, Landon, was born at a healthy 7 pounds, 7 ounces at birth. Doctors gave him an Apgar score of 8 and 9, but just a few days after birth, he would be gone.

Johnson shares her heartbreaking story on For Every Mom in an effort to spread the word that fed is best.

"Landon was on my breast – all of the time. The lactation consultants would come in and see that 'he had a great latch and was doing fine.'"

Unfortunately, Landon was not doing fine.

Johnson wasn't producing enough milk, and Landon was literally starving to death.

The couple was discharged from the hospital, but 12 hours after leaving, the Johnson's precious Landon was in cardiac arrest caused by dehydration.

While breastfeeding is typically the first choice for most moms, we share this story to shed light on how important it is for each parent to pay attention to their own instincts and their baby's cues.
