Hurricane Victims Living with Newborn Son in Walmart Parking Lot

Support from strangers helped this family find shelter.

Wilmer Capps and Lorrainda Smith welcomed their son Luke into the world three days after Hurricane Michael made landfall. After being discharged from the hospital to the chaos of Michael’s aftermath, the family was forced to seek shelter at a Walmart parking lot.

Worries about the heat and sanitation set in for their newborn.

"We had everything. Full-time job, a place to live. One day we had it all, the next we had nothing," said Smith in an interview with the Associated Press. "This is not what I thought I'd be bringing him back to."
