According to one professor, who studies the effects of cough medicine and the respiratory system, chocolate is actually better for a cough than codeine syrup. Why? Chocolate coats the throat more successfully.
The smooth stickiness of chocolate soothes the nerve endings in the throat. Professor Alyn Morice explains that cocoa also has cough-suppressing properties. Please note, though, that this is only applicable to chocolate bars and other such foods, not hot chocolate: the drink is too diluted to coat properly.
AllRecipes writes that chocolate is the better choice because it won't give an afflicted person the usual fuzzy-headed side effects. Codeine can cloud a person's senses. Chocolate, however, won't.
